Bisibelebath / Sambar rice/ Kadhamba Sadham

Bisibelebath is a very popular dish in South India. You can find this menu in every restaurants. with just a little preparation you can make this yummy sambar rice. Brahmins used to make kadhamba sadham in a very similar way but they omit onion and tomato from the recipe. We can make rice and sambar separately and add together or we can cook rice and dal together in cooker and add with the other stuffs. Either way we can do it.


Ingredients:

  1. For Grinding:
    • Red Chilly - 4 to 5
    • Coriander Seeds - 2 tbsp
    • Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp
    • Channa dal - 1 tbsp
    • Urad Dal - 1 tbsp
    • Coconut - 1/4 cup
    • Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
    • Curry leaves - 5 to 6


  2. Others:
    • Rice - 1 cup
    • Toor dal - 1/4 cup
    • Tamarind - 1& 1/2 tbsp
    • Small Onion - 10
    • Tomato - 1
    • Brinjal - 1
    • Potato -1
    • Drumstick - 1
    • Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
    • Ghee


Cooking Instructions:

  • Pressure cook rice (i prefer to use boiled rice) with 3 cups of water for 4 whistles. 
  • Pressure cook dal with a cup of water. Mash it well.
  • Soak tamarind in hot water for 10 to 15 mins and extract the juice.
  • Dry roast all the ingredients mentioned under for grinding. Grind it coarsely.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter.
  • Saute Onion for a min and add tomato.
  • Add vegetables, turmeric powder, salt and a cup of water. Let it cook for 5 to 6 mins.
  • Add Tamarind extract and cook till raw smell goes.
  • Add cooked dal and cook for 3 to 4 mins.
  • Add the ground powder and mix it well. Cover it and switch off the flame.
  • Slightly mash the rice and add sambar batch by batch and mix it. 
  • Finally add ghee and give a nice mix. Adjust the salt if needed.
  • Serve hot with potato fry and  appalam.
