Kathirikai Masiyal/ Mashed Brinjal / Eggplant Gravy/ Baingan Bhatra

Each state in India has their own style of cooking. Brinjal Masiyal is one of the tastiest and easiest dish which goes well with rice and roti. It gives a rich gravy consistency. Let's see how to prepare it:


Ingredients:

  • Brinjal/ Egg plant - 1 big or 5 small
  • Onion - 1
  • Tomato - 1
  • Garlic - 6 cloves
  • Ginger - 1 inch
  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder -1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
  • Garam Masala - 1 tsp
  • Green chilli - 1
  • Salt to taste
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp

Cooking Instructions:

  • Chop the brinjal into cubes and immerse into plain water.
  • Grind ginger, garlic, 2 tbsp onion, Red chilli powder, Coriander powder, Garam Masala and Turmeric powder to a smooth paste.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.
  • Add Onion and cook till translucent.
  • Add the ground paste and cook till raw smell goes by adding little water, so that it'll not get burned.
  • Add Tomato and cook till mushy.
  • Add brinjal and salt. Cover and cook in medium flame for 10 mins by adding some water.
  • Once done mash it nicely.
  • Serve with steamed rice or roti.
