Pavakkai Pitlai/ Bittergourd pitlai


Ingredients:

   Pavakkai Pitlai                               
      Cooking Time : 20 mins
  • Toor Dal - 1/4 cup
  • Bitter gourd - 1
  • Tamarind pulp - 1 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Oil - 2 tsp

     For Roasting & Grinding:

  • Coriander seeds - 1 tbsp
  • Channa dal - 1/2 tbsp
  • Urad dal - 1/2 tbsp
  • Red chilly - 4
  • Coconut - 3 tbsp

Cooking Instructions:

  • Wash and rinse toor dal,add turmeric powder,asafoetida and enough water. Pressure cook it along with bitter gourd.
  • Roast coriander seeds, channa dal, urad dal and red chilly with a tsp of oil. Keep it aside and in the same pan add coconut and roast till it turn slight brown. Grind everything to a smooth paste.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. Allow it to splutter. Then, add tamarind pulp and allow it to boil. Now add the cooked bitter gourd alone.
  • Add cooked dal and salt. Adjust water if needed. Now add the coconut paste and allow it to boil and turn off.
  • Serve hot with plain rice.
